INHERITANCE

INHERITANCE

Ash, cherry,3 found object (chair), embroidery thread, velvet
3 x 9 x  3.5’

INHERITANCE is comprised of two individual pieces: a table and a chair. The table stretches 8 feet long and is surrounded beneath the apron by rails preventing a sitter’s legs from sliding underneath the table. There is a lone chair positioned at the head of the table, simultaneously implying gendered norms of a masculine authority figure and representing the othering feelings of dining “alone.” The cushion of the chair is hand-embroidered velvet, stitched in redwork with inherited embroidery samplers, along with a quote from a poem by trans author River Halen: “… the ancient question, do I keep my inheritance or let myself be seen.” This work is a part of a larger installation entitled You are a stranger, you always have been.
